ThereвЂ™s no particular order here, although that might change in the future since I could arrange this chronologically and push the inquiry all the way back to how the Greeks thought about the term (the root term вЂњ techne,вЂќ that is). I figure the easiest thing to do is to just list the definitions by author.

If youвЂ™re serious about studying technology history and criticism, you should follow his blog and check out his book, The Tourist and The Pilgrim: Essays on Life and Technology in the Digital Age, which is a collection of some of his finest essays.ДЄnyway, for what itвЂ™s worth, I figured I would create this post to list some of the more interesting definitions of вЂњtechnologyвЂќ that I have uncovered in my own research. We donвЂ™t always agree on things - in fact, I am quite certain that most of my comparatively amateurish work must make his blood boil at times! - but you wonвЂ™t find a more thoughtful technology scholar alive today than Michael Sacasas. Quite right, and for a more detailed and critical discussion of how earlier scholars, historians, and intellectuals have defined or thought about the term вЂњtechnology,вЂќ youвЂ™ll want to check out MichaelвЂ™s other recent essay, вЂњ What Are We Talking About When We Talk About Technology?вЂќ which preceded the one cited above. вЂњIn fact, technology is a word we use all of the time, and ordinarily it seems to work well enough as a shorthand, catch-all sort of word,вЂќ notes the always-insightful Michael Sacasas in his essay вЂњ Traditions of Technological Criticism.вЂќ вЂњThat same sometimes useful quality, however, makes it inadequate and counter-productive in situations that call for more precise terminology,вЂќ he says. Yet, I am often struck by how few of the authors of these works even bother defining what they mean by вЂњtechnology.вЂќ I find that frustrating because, if you are going to make an attempt to either study or critique a particular technology or technological practice or development, then you probably should take the time to tell us how broadly or narrowly you are defining the term вЂњtechnologyвЂќ or вЂњtechnological process.вЂќ

General guidelines for using an acceptable amount of duplicated material are in the Publication Manual in Sections 1.16 and 8.3.I spend a lot of time reading books and essays about technology more specifically, books and essays about technology history and criticism. When the duplicated material is limited in scope, this approach is permissible. In specific circumstances, authors may wish to duplicate their previously used words without quotation marks or citation (e.g., in describing the details of an instrument or an analytic approach), feeling that extensive self-referencing is undesirable or awkward and that rewording may lead to inaccuracies. However, incorporating previous classwork into oneвЂ™s thesis or dissertation and building on oneвЂ™s own existing writing may be permissible students who wish to do this should discuss their ideas with their instructor or advisor and follow their universityвЂ™s honor code, ethics code, or academic policies when reusing their previous work.

Using the same paper in multiple classes may violate the academic integrity policy, honor code, or ethics code of the university. Some institutions may consider it self-plagiarism if a student submits a paper written for one class to complete an assignment for another class without permission from the current instructor.
